Scooter V-Belt

DISCLAIMER: Maintenance, disassembly and repair of your scooter should only be performed by people with sufficient mechanical skill or experience so that no unsafe repair or modifications are made.

Before you begin a scooter v-belt replacement, make sure you have ordered a new belt that is the correct size for your scooter. Also, a word to the wise, a cheap belt will cost you more down the road. It is recommended to buy either a brand name or premium belt such as a Gates Powerlink or Kevlar Belt. They will last longer than a cheaper standard belt.

Let’s begin! First you will need to remove the CVT cover from the engine to expose the drive train of your scooter. The cover is held in place by a handful of bolts. Once the bolts have been removed, you may need to give a gentle tap on the CVT cover with a soft rubber mallet. Always use a rubber mallet to avoid marring or flattening the cover. A gentle tap usually will help “pop” the CVT cover free from the engine.

Once the CVT cover is off, inspect the inside of the CVT. Usually the belt will be shredded and there will be a lot of belt debris. Remove the old belt and clean out all debris from the CVT, variator and clutch. Any debris left in the CVT will likely cause further problems later on.

Now you need to remove the outside half of the variator. A 17 mm socket will be needed to remove the nut. This is probably the most difficult part, as the engine will want to turn with the variator. This is where the impact gun comes in handy. If you do not have an impact gun, you can use a block of wood and a flat screwdriver as a wedge.

Once the nut has been removed, pull off the variator top half. A quick inspection of the roller weights inside is necessary to ensure there are no flat spots or excessive wear. Replace the roller weights if this the case. Now check the clutch pulley operation. You are making sure that the pulley can move freely when compressing with your fingers. To install the belt on the clutch first you will need to compress the clutch. Leave enough slack to loop the scooter belt back on to the crankshaft where the variator will be reinstalled.
